Chapter 13

I STARED BLANKLY OUT THE window in my English class.

Right at Xavier.

I did a double take, sitting up straight and blinking rapidly.

Unfortunately, my eyes weren’t deceiving me. There he was lounging in the courtyard outside the school, smoking a cigar. I looked around the classroom to see if anyone else had noticed him, but the other kids were all looking toward the front of the room.

Any minute now, security would come by and escort Xavier off school property. They were known for regularly patrolling that area and busting the kids who snuck outside, thinking they were going to have a quick smoke.

I would just ignore him. That was the smart thing to do. Security would take care of it. But what if Xavier pulled one of his tricks?

No, that wouldn’t happen. Xavier wasn’t stupid.

Was he?

I looked at the front of the room and tried to focus on Mrs. Gregory’s lecture on the symbolism in Death of a Salesman.

This wasn’t my problem. Catching trespassers wasn’t my problem, even if I did happen to know the trespasser.

My gaze drifted over to the window again and my eyes met Xavier’s. Shit! He smiled and crooked his finger at me. Come here.

Shit, shit, double shit. I couldn’t pretend to ignore him anymore. I sighed and stretched my hand in the air.

“Yes, Miss Parks? Is there something you wanted to say about the symbolism of diamonds in Death of a Salesman?”

“Um, no, ma’am. Can I—May I go to the restroom?” My classmates snickered at Mrs. Gregory’s scowl.

“You’re interrupting my lecture to ask me that?” she said sternly.

“I’m sorry. It’s, uh, a bit of an emergency.”

She narrowed her eyes at me, and when I didn’t back down she huffed. “Fine. Take the pass.”

I shot out of my seat and grabbed the pass hanging on the chalkboard on the way out the door. I jogged down the hallway as fast as I could without getting myself in trouble.

I burst through the courtyard doors. “What are you doing here?”

Xavier blew out a breath of smoke, dropped his cigar on the ground, and stepped on it with his foot, grounding it into the pavement.

“Hello, Ava.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Is that any way to treat your dear Uncle Xavier?”

“Cut the bullshit. We both know I’ve never liked you. There’s no reason to pretend otherwise. What do you want?”

Xavier gave an approving smile. He appreciated my candor.

“I’m just checking on your progress. Any white auras yet?”

“If I’d found one, you’d already have the name. My mom’s going to be pissed you came here.”

He waved his hand, dismissing my warning. “What Mary doesn’t know won’t hurt her. Understand?”

While his gesture was blasé, his tone was not. It was threatening.

I stuck my chin out and nodded.

“You don’t have to be picky. Turn in the first white aura you find and you can go back to your life.”

Yeah, until the next time he demanded a name.

I glanced over my shoulder at the building. If anyone saw me out here, Mrs. Gregory would surely write me a referral and send me to the principal’s office.
